Riverbed

Laura Whitesides Host has a B.F.A.in painting and ceramics from University of Michigan; teaches mixed media painting and monotype at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center and Visual Artist Association of Livonia; is one of the founding members (since 1987) of the artist-run gallery, Lawrence Street Gallery, in Ferndale, Michigan; is on the executive boards of the Michigan Water Color Society, Birmingham Society of Women Painters as well as Lawrence St. Gallery. 

Whitesides Host has had many solo exhibits; has work in numerous juried shows statewide and nationally and has paintings in many corporate and private collections and has been a juror for numerous Michigan exhibits.

"For the last couple of years I have immersed myself in investigating monotypes.  I took a few classes and became enchanted with the many processes and making of plates and then the final “aha”  moment when the print is revealed after going through the press.  I enjoy using multiple processes and layers to finally reach a finished piece.  "

"The word “Monotype” doesn’t mean just once through the press but a one-of-a-kind print, not an edition of the same image.   I am always amazed how many techniques there are in printmaking and as a painter how easily these processes meld with 'my way of painting'.  Textures and multi-layered planes as well as color have always been important in my work.  The monotypes, monoprints and collagraphs are continuations of the use of color, texture and layering that I incorporate in my paintings. "
